Rope & Climbing Ascender

An ascender is an equipment that is used by climbers for the purpose of either directly ascending ropes or for the purpose of protection while climbing steep mountainous regions. The equipment is mostly used in pairs with a similar functionality as compared to friction knots. Climbing ascenders are however reportedly faster, safer and much easier to use as compared to friction knots. The mechanical form of an ascender allows easy movement in the direction of choice allowing the climbing a firm grip on the rope in use. These ascenders are made up of various elements like Aluminum, Stainless Steel, Plastic, Rubber and Nylon with a specifically designed ergonomic handle for a comfortable and powerful grip. A locking mechanism to is deployed with the ascender in order to prevent the climber from accidentally being detached from the rope in use. Usually used in the pair, the ascenders are in two parts that are used for easy sliding on the rope and balancing the weight of the climber at the same time.

A Jumar is a type of ascender that was essentially named after two of its inventors Jurgen and Walter Marti. The name of the device has also led to the coining of the term ‘Jumaring’ which is used for the process that involves the usage of the device. In the process of Jumaring, the second climber directly climbs the rope instead of climbing the rock.
